Suggestions for Starting to Incorporate Compassionate Communication Into Your Life

How do we make Compassionate Communication a part of our lives?
Learning the principles is a start. Living them is a lifelong practice. We can learn and grow while using real life experiences to become more compassionate with ourselves and others.

There are a number of ways you can learn about and incorporate Compassionate Communication into your life. We're here to support you on your journey. Just let us know how we can help.

  1. Read Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s book, Nonviolent Communication,
    A Language of Life.
  2. Watch the DVD, The Basics of Compassionate Communication by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg. The DVD is available at our library or at the Center for Nonviolent Communication.
  3. Attend an Introduction to Compassionate Communication Workshop, see Workshops and Classes.
  4. Slow down.  Take a deep breath before speaking.
  5. When you notice that you are judging yourself or others, remind yourself that judgments are expressions of unmet needs.
  6. When you hear others judging or criticizing you, remind yourself that they are people in pain who are expressing their unmet needs.
  7. When you see a person speaking in a way that makes it difficult to respond compassionately, try to think of them as a person in pain.
  8. When you find yourself emotionally involved in a conversation, focus on your own feelings and what needs of yours that are or are not being met.  When you have identified your own feelings and needs, try to guess what the other person might be feeling and needing.
  9. Form or join a Study or Practice Group.
  10. Attend trainings.  See:
